How To Time A Cycling Time Trial For Free
Riders go off one at a time and each is timed from their own start time to their finish time, so there is no gun time. Switch on Time trial mode in the app and the phone saves the exact time the moment you press the button, then lets you type the rider's number afterwards.
This is a free way to time your cycling time trial. Our timing app, results pages and live results cost nothing to use. Ask us for a free account and time your own event with just a few phones.

A start phone and a finish phone, both with Time trial mode switched on. The gun time is never used.
Start phone
At the start line. Saves each rider's start time as they are sent off.
Finish phone
At the finish line. Saves each rider's finish time as they cross it.
Time trial mode
A switch in the app's Settings. The time is saved the instant you press the button, so you never miss a rider while typing a number.
2. Using Time trial mode on the phone
First, turn it on. Open the app's Settings page and switch on Time trial mode (cycling events). Do this on both phones, as the switch is kept on each phone. Then, for every rider, it is three steps:
- Press Record Time the moment the rider crosses the line. The exact time is saved on the phone and appears as a small time chip at the top.
- Type the rider's number on the keypad and press Enter number & Save. The time is saved against that number.
- Ready for the next rider. The button goes back to Record Time.
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Record Time | Saves the time now. You can press it again straight away for the next rider, before you have typed the first number. |
| Time chips (for example 10:12:41) | Every time that is still waiting for a number. Tap a chip to choose which time the next number goes to. The first one is selected for you. |
| + Time | Saves another time while some are still waiting. Useful when two or three riders arrive together. |
| No number | Saves the selected time with no number, when you could not read it. Fix it afterwards, see the tips. |
3. How the system works out the net time
Each rider's net time is their own finish time minus their own start time:
Here are three riders sent off one minute apart, as the system sees them:
| Number | Start time | Finish time | Net time | Position |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 | 09:01:00 | 09:25:42 | 00:24:42 | 2 |
| 13 | 09:02:00 | 09:26:08 | 00:24:08 | 1 |
| 14 | 09:03:00 | 09:28:15 | 00:25:15 | 3 |
- Position is the order of the net times, fastest first. Rider 12 finished first, but rider 13 started a minute later and rode faster, so 13 is 1st.
- Gender and age category positions are worked out from the riders' details.
- Every rider needs both a start time and a finish time to get a net time.
4. Watch it work (animation)
Three riders are sent off a minute apart. Watch the start and finish times being saved first, the numbers added afterwards, and the results sorting by net time.
Results, sorted by net time
Times are saved the instant the button is pressed, then the number is added. Each net time is the finish time minus that rider's own start time.
5. Setting it up
- Create the event. Choose the event type Net Time Event (Start & Finish - 2 timing points). It creates the race and two timing points for you: Start and Finish.
- Leave the gun time Not set. Each rider is timed from their own start time. In your event menu, Gun time should say Not set.
- Add your riders. Add them one at a time, or import a CSV with the number, name, gender, date of birth and club. Ages are turned into age categories automatically.
- Set up the phones. Open the timing app on each phone, enter the event password (shown in your event menu), and in Settings pick that phone's timing point: Start or Finish.
- Switch on Time trial mode. Still in Settings, switch on Time trial mode (cycling events) on both phones.
- Run the race. Press Record Time as each rider is sent off, and again as each one finishes, adding the number each time. Results build up live.
- After the race. Open the Results tab to check the net times, and print the reports. Riders can also see their net time on the public results page.
6. Tips for marshals
- Press Record Time first, always. Press it the moment the rider is sent off or crosses the line, then deal with the number. The time is already saved.
- Several riders together? Press Record Time (or + Time) for each one, then add the numbers one by one. Tap a time chip to choose which time the next number goes to.
- Could not read a number? Press No number to save the time anyway. Open the Log on the phone, or Raw Times in your timing account, and add the number afterwards.
- Every rider needs a start time. With no start time, a rider has no net time. If someone is missed at the start, add their start time in Raw Times and their time appears.
- Wrong number typed? Fix it in Raw Times and the results update.
- Check the clock matches. Both phones take their time from their own clock, so check they show the same time before the first rider goes.
- Accidental double times are fine. If the same number is saved twice at a point, the earliest time is the one that counts.
7. Results and reports
| Where | What you get |
|---|---|
| Results tab | Every rider with their net time, position, and gender and age category positions. Also has quick report buttons and a CSV download. |
| Net Time Report | A print-ready list of everyone in net time order. |
| Category Report | The top finishers in each age category and gender, ready for prize giving. |
| Start List | A print-ready list of riders with their start times. |
| Public results page | Riders find their name or number and see their net time and positions, live as people finish. |
